When a new community, Sunfield, was being developed in Buda, Texas—just 15 miles south of Austin—builders sought the perfect surface coatings for their amenity center. A focal point of the community, the amenity center would feature a lazy river and gathering spaces designed for residents to enjoy year-round. Beacon Construction, Inc., the general contractor for the project, had a longstanding working relationship with SUNDEK and knew they could trust them to deliver a high-quality, long-lasting decorative surface. When it came time to determine the best coatings for the surfaces on the island at the center of the lazy river and the surrounding areas, Beacon reached out to Scott Hubbard, President of SUNDEK of Austin.

Given the scale of the community of Sunfield—which would eventually house 10,000 homes—they needed a coating that was highly durable, slip-resistant, and easy to maintain. The amenity center would see significant foot traffic, making it essential that the surface be comfortable to walk on and able to withstand wear and tear over time. SUNDEK listened carefully to Beacon’s needs and recommended a trusted and proven solution: Classic Texture.
Classic Texture was the ideal choice for this project, offering a combination of safety, durability, and aesthetics. This slip-resistant texture ensures a secure surface in all conditions, reducing the risk of slips and falls—an essential feature for any water-related environment. Its non-porous acrylic finish prevents dirt, oils, and chemicals from penetrating the surface, significantly reducing maintenance time and costs. Additionally, Classic Texture’s variable texture levels provide a comfortable walking surface, staying cooler than traditional concrete, brick, or tile, even in the hot Texas sun.

Beyond its performance, Classic Texture is one of the most economical and durable decorative concrete coatings available. “It’s a smart investment for large-scale community projects like this one,” says Scott.
For color selection, the project’s architect and builder chose Franciscan Tan. This warm, neutral shade was an excellent fit for the space, complementing the natural surroundings and overall design aesthetic. More importantly, its light tone helped to keep the surface from becoming too hot under the blazing Texas sun. This small but crucial detail ensured that residents would be able to comfortably enjoy the amenity center, even on the hottest days of the year.

The project was completed in two phases. First, SUNDEK tackled the large island in the center of the lazy river, ensuring that this focal point of the community’s water feature was finished to perfection. Two months later, they returned to complete the outer section of the amenity center which included walkways, stairways, bridges, hangout spots under pergolas, and more. Even though the concrete used was a new pour, it required some additional finishing and detail work before Classic Texture could be applied. SUNDEK’s team carefully addressed these areas to ensure a smooth and flawless result.
In total, SUNDEK installed approximately 50,000 square feet of Classic Texture throughout Sunfield’s amenity center. The finished result was not only visually appealing but also provided a durable, comfortable, and safe surface for the residents to enjoy. With the project completed, the new community now has a beautifully finished space where residents can gather, cool off, and enjoy the outdoors for years to come.
