Color Flake Floors

As the name implies color flake floors are just that, different colored flakes (vinyl paint flakes) of varying sizes and colors that create a rich consistent color and pattern to an existing slab of concrete. Color flake floors are often found in garages, retail stores, sunrooms and corridors. The process of creating a color flake floor is quite interesting.

Once the concrete substrate has been properly repaired, cleaned and patched, a primer coat of either epoxy or polyaspartic is applied to the concrete. Depending on the system chosen there can be two primer coats or one. While the primer or bond coat is still wet, a broadcast of paint flakes is applied to entire coated surface until the coating is no longer visible. This is called broadcast to rejection.

The floor is then left to dry.

Once the floor is dry the loose paint chips that did not glue down to the coating are removed and the surface is scraped of all loose flakes.

A surface seal coat or top coat of polyaspartic or Polyurethane is then applied overtop the paint flakes thereby sealing and bonding them together. A second top coat if often advised for a more consistent longer lasting finish.

Color flake systems are ideal for tough flooring conditions. Color flake floors hold up to wear and tear, they are chemical resistant, abrasion resistant, hold up to hot tire pickup from vehicular tires, and also offer impact resistance due to their overall thickness.

Color flake systems also have some pretty cool design elements that make them especially attractive for those looking for a really unique floor.

The paint chips are available in many different sizes. Smaller flakes create a more 'Granite' looking floor finish. The flakes are also available in many different and custom colors including Neon, Glow in the Dark and Shimmering metallic. By combining these together you can create a totally custom look and floor for any setting. These are ideal systems to be used in commercial and retail stores. Architects and designers can brand a store based on colors and patterns and the same floor can be replicated across the nation with their own custom blend.

One last detail about color flake floors is the ability to install these floors in one day. That's right! With fast drying polyaspartics you can create a floor system that exceeds current timelines and deadlines for floor installations and have it ready for light foot traffic the day after installation!
