SUNDEK Specified for Future Work with Popular Resort

After completing a specialty project for Kalahari Resorts at their Round Rock, TX, location, the resort has specified SUNDEK for future projects.

In multiple cities throughout the U.S., Kalahari Resorts & Conventions are vacation destinations for everyone ranging from kids to adults. When designing their location in Round Rock, Texas, they needed a contractor to construct custom countertops for their Grotto Outdoor Swim Up Bar & Pool area. The countertops would obviously need to be beautiful and chic to fit the vibe of their resort, but they also needed to be durable to withstand use by thousands of people—in a chlorinated pool. The owners of Kalahari contacted SUNDEK of Austin about the project.

SUNDEK of Austin completed the project using SunOne, a polyaspartic coating that cures quickly. Not only did they finish the project on a tight deadline, they installed the countertops in a pool full of water (learn more about this project and see more pictures).

When designing the location at Round Rock, Kalahari had already specified a different contractor for the pool deck surface as they had planned a sandblasted finish. However, Kalahari was so impressed by the work SUNDEK did on the countertops that they initiated discussions about what other type of work the contractor could be involved in for the second phase of work at Round Rock and new builds in other locations.

After a few years of the Round Rock location being open, Kalahari has found that sandblasted concrete isn’t the best surface for pool deck in a location that gets so hot during summer. In addition to being uncomfortable to walk on with bare feet on scorching days, its porosity makes the surface difficult to clean which isn’t ideal for a resort where spills are inevitable. This result has led Kalahari to look for a different option for their future surfaces—one that’s more suited for the location and the type of use the site gets.

As Kalahari makes plans for the second phase of work at Round Rock which will be completed during Q2 of 2023, Scott Hubbard, commercial and residential sales manager for SUNDEK of Austin, has offered possible solutions during conversations with Kalahari management. “They’re looking for something that that stays cool and is also maintenance friendly,” says Hubbard. For this need, Hubbard and his team are recommending the knockdown Classic Texture in light color for the 15,000 square feet that will be coated. Classic Texture is SUNDEK’s most requested coating for pool deck surfaces, and it’s no wonder: in addition to staying cool, it’s also known for being slip resistant and easy to clean.

Along with the expansion at the Round Rock location, SUNDEK has been specified by the architect for the new Kalahari location in the Washington, D.C., area. This project is still in the works, and Hubbard has been working with Kalahari to offer solutions that meet their aesthetic and functional needs. “The new site will have treehouses and bungalows, and we’re looking to see what type of design we can do for them that would also be slip resistant and easy to clean,” says Hubbard. An epoxy with SunFlek is one option that would offer the safety and comfort requirement. It’ll also fit right into the aesthetic by mimicking the appearance of sand.

SunFlek is colored quartz aggregate that’s incorporated into epoxy, creating a durable surface that looks stunning and also provides traction. The combination of the quartz and aggregate creates a strong surface that’ll last for years to come—even with high amounts of foot traffic, spills, and everything else that happens at a resort that sees thousands of people every year.

As their work with Kalahari management and project architects continues, SUNDEK looks forward to delivering quality service and a finish product that provides a safe, eye-catching, and comfortable surface for guests to enjoy for many years to come.
